Linda Johnson — “Up in Flames: How Aiken Tries to Burn Itself Down”
Aiken has a fire problem. Hotels, churches, houses, the whole downtown—we seem determined to burn it down. Where? Why? What are the consequences? Hear stories, tragic and funny, about Aiken’s pyromania.
Sam Ellis — “Aiken’s Unique History Is Tied to Railroad History”
The lecture will review the many innovations and achievements of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company and later the South Carolina and Southern Railway. These rail innovations not only contributed to the founding of Aiken but also determined, in a significant way, how and why Aiken developed as it did, laying the groundwork for our equestrian industry.
